“Zindagi aur maut uparwale ke haath hai jahanpana, jise na aap badal
sakte hai na mein. Hum sab toh rangmanch ki katputlia hai, jiski door uparwale
ke haath bandhi hai. Kab, Kaun, kaise uthega, yeh koi Nahi janta” – The famous
dialog from the 1970 film Anand echoed in my ears when I heard about Kakaji’s
demise. The super star of the 70s breathed his last on 18th July
2012… but the footprints that he has left behind will be inscribed eternally.
Though he is more remembered for
his commercial blockbusters like “Aradhana”, “Kati Patang”, “Amar Prem” and “Dushman”,
the Hrishikesh Mukherjee film – “Anand” has been one of my all-time favourite ‘Rajesh
Khanna movie’.
I watched this movie umpteen times, tirelessly, and every time I watch it, it charges me up to
live life to the fullest. “Anand” is a story of a young man infected by a
terminal disease, and has a few months to live. The movie is not really a
story, but how Anand spends the last few days of his life, every moment full of
life! In those last few days, he wins a lot of hearts – the strict head-nurse
of the hospital, the doctor, the doctor’s wife who sees a brother in him and
above all – the frustrated and sulking Dr. Banerjee whose attitude towards life
takes a u-turn after meeting Anand.
A few scenes leave lasting
imprints in your mind:
1
The head nurse annoyed about
Anand’s fleeing from the hospital raises her voice and shows displeasure by
saying she is being strict because she cares for the patients. The stringent heart
melts in no time, when she hears Anand reply – “We shouldn’t call you sister.
We should call you Mother, because you care like mother.”
2
Dr. Banerjee stealthily listens
to Anand sing a painful song. The doctor then goes to Anand and expresses that
he had felt the pain in the song, and urges him to share it with him. Anand
simply replies – “Sorry, I am selfish in this regard”.
3
When the wife of Doctor who is
treating him discovers about Anand’s terminal illness, breaks into tears when
she sees Anand smile in front of her. Anand says – “Instead of crying because I
won’t be with you in a few days, why can’t you celebrate this moment because I
am with you now?”
These thoughtfully executed scenes studded in the movie convey a beautiful philosophy of life- “Live today to the
fullest. Keep the sorrows to yourself and spread the happiness”.
The best way of paying homage to
Kakaji, would be watching the movie “Anand” once again. I did it, by watching
it yet another time on youtube on 18th July.
The movie ends with a quote – “Anand
mare nahi. Anand marte nahi.” This holds true for Kakaji as well.
Even though we try our best to be ahppy everyday sometimes such situations happen ki we have to compromise and live and then hapiness becomes derogatory.....
ReplyDeleteIts really true.V should live present moment to the fullest.Kya pata kal ho na ho :)
ReplyDeleteyeah even i had watched Anand on 18th july...on set max
ReplyDeleteits indeed a very good movie of kakaji...
One more scene of that murali lal.... the stage actor fellow from the movie... when he got to know about his disease, he was taken aback...that too was good...
Yes.. That is also a great scene... He says - "Allah kare yeh sharth Ramu Kaka jeet jaye.." (He challenges Ramu Kaka that cancer has no cure)
DeleteThe 'Anand' movie is also one of my favourite movies which I love to watch in my spare time. The message conveyed by the movie with its heart touching dialogues and songs are very strong. It teaches you how you should lead a life. I am not avery big fan of Rajesh khanna but in this movie he really did a great job of depicting the character every one loved. Kaka will always be remembered for this. And truly ' Anand Naver Dies'
